Port Augusta was once a seaport and is also known as the ‘Crossroads of Australia,’ as this is where the main roads from Sydney to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin all cross through, together with The Ghan and the Indian Pacific.

The city is located on the tranquil waterways of the Spencer Gulf, close to the Flinders Ranges and approximately 322 kilometres from Adelaide, and offers plenty of history, culture, and adventure.

Highlights for nature lovers include exploring the National Parks, including the Flinders Ranges, Mount Remarkable and the Gawler Ranges, which all have walking trails and 4WD tracks.

Another popular itinerary item for visitors is the self-guided Port August Heritage Walk, which takes approximately two hours by foot and allows you to gain a greater insight into the contribution Port Augusta made to the development of the Outback of South Australia.

For history lovers, the Wadlata Outback Centre, also home to the Visitor Information Centre, is a definite must-see when visiting Port Augusta. This museum and visitor centre features an attraction known as the ‘Tunnel of Time,’ which tells the stories of local Aboriginal and European histories through audio-visual displays and interactive exhibits.

If you are feeling more adventurous, then you will want to check out the Water Tower Lookout, a water tower originally built in 1882 which affords the best viewpoint in Port Augusta over the gulf and town centre.
